About the appeal
Tibet has been occupied by China for more than 60 years. Since then, the Tibetan people have become marginalised in their own country, Tibetan culture has been severely restricted, and hundreds of thousands of Tibetans have died as a result of the occupation, through torture, execution, suicides and starvation. Tibet’s rich natural resources are diverted to the Chinese mainland, and fundamental rights continue to be denied. Simply saying the words “Free Tibet” or displaying a Tibetan national flag can result in arrest, torture and imprisonment. Now is the time to Put Tibet Back on the Map and give the Tibetan people the right to determine their own future.
You will see that we have highlighted some, but by no means all, of the key temples and monasteries of Tibet. These important sites represent the heart of Tibetan culture and identity. These places, like the whole of Tibet, are currently under China's rule, but you can "free" them from China's occupation by buying tiles on the photos that represent Tibet's spiritual heart. The money raised from this appeal will support the work of the International Tibet Support Network, a coordinating body for the worldwide coalition of Tibet groups, and Students for a Free Tibet, one of the most active and dynamic organisations working for Tibet.
About International Tibet Support Network and Students for a Free Tibet
The International Tibet Support Network (ITSN) and Students for a Free Tibet (SFT) are working in together on this project.ITSN is a vibrant coalition of nearly 170 Tibet-related non-governmental organisations in more than 50 countries worldwide. We are dedicated to campaigning non-violently to restore the rights of the that the Tibetan people lost when China occupied Tibet sixty years ago.
Our purpose is to maximise the effectiveness of the worldwide Tibet movement by increasing the capacity of individual member organisations, developing coordinated strategic campaigns, and encouraging increased cooperation among organisations, thereby strengthening the Tibet movement as a whole.
SFT, a member organisation of ITSN, works in solidarity with the Tibetan people in their struggle for freedom and independence. We are a chapter-based network of young people and activists around the world. Through education, grassroots organizing, and non-violent direct action, we campaign for Tibetans’ fundamental right to political freedom. Our role is to empower and train youth as leaders in the worldwide movement for social justice.
